For Referrers
Why are you being asked for a referral to midwifery services?
Currently, Australian legislation requires a referral from a GP or medical practitioner to a Private Practice Midwife (PPM) for pregnant women to access Medicare rebates for midwifery services. This referral is for antenatal and/or postnatal care only.

PPMs offer tailored midwifery services to women and their families through a continuity of care model. There is great evidence of improved outcomes in the antenatal, birth, and postnatal periods in those families that choose this model.

PPMs are required to have completed additional qualifications and have a large amount of experience in order to be qualified as "Endorsed Midwives" and provide private midwifery care. We work under the guidance of a robust regulatory framework to support the safe, ethical, evidence-based and holistic maternity care to women and families.
